Biography

Irwin Stelzer is a senior fellow and director of Hudson Institute’s economic policy studies group. He is also the U.S. economic and political columnist for The Sunday Times (London) and writes regularly for The Wall Street Journal Europe.

Stelzer founded National Economic Research Associates, Inc. (NERA) in 1961 and served as its president until1983. As a consultant, Stelzer advises on market strategy, pricing and antitrust issues, and regulatory matters.

Former Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport

Biography

James recently stepped down as a member of the House of Commons and is director of the Open Left project at Demos. His interests include the economy, further education, welfare and capabilities. Previously, he was Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

In government, James was also Minister of State for Pensions Reform, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and Parliamentary Private Secretary to Ruth Kelly MP in the Cabinet Office. He joined the Government as an Assistant Whip in December 2004.

Before entering Parliament in 2001 he was Head of Corporate Planning at the BBC (1995-1997) and worked as a special adviser on culture, media, sport and the knowledge economy for the then Prime Minister Tony Blair from 1997 to 2001.

He read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Balliol College, University of Oxford.

Conference overview:

The Beesley Lectures are a series of eight annual lectures covering regulated industries in the UK. Taking place every Thursday between 16th September and 4th November this year, the events will begin with registration at 6.30pm at the Institute of Directors. Delegates are encouraged to network over refreshments until 7pm, when the lecture will commence. An industry-leading speaker will address the audience for one hour and a specialist will give a short response before handing over to the floor for further discussion. Each lecture will end at 8.45pm with refreshments.
