Biography

Roger Bootle runs the consultancy, Capital Economics, which specialises in macroeconomics and the economics of the property market. He is also Economic Adviser to Deloitte and a Specialist Adviser to the House of Commons Treasury Committee. He was formerly Group Chief Economist of HSBC and used to be on the Chancellor’s panel of Independent Economic Advisers.

He has written many books including The Trouble with Markets, which analyses the deep causes of the recent financial crisis.

Biography

Thomas Mayer is Chief Economist of Deutsche Bank Group and Head of Deutsche Bank Research.


From 2002 to 2009 he was Chief European Economist at Deutsche Bank in London and co-head of the Bank’s Global Economics Group. Before Thomas Mayer joined Deutsche Bank in 2002, he worked for Goldman Sachs in Frankfurt and London (1991-2002), and for Salomon Brothers in London (1990-91). Before moving to the private sector, he held positions at the International Monetary Fund in Washington D.C. (1983-1990) and at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (1978-82). In 1982, he received a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Kiel and is a CFA Charterholder since 2002.


Thomas Mayer has published numerous articles on international and European economic issues in professional journals and has commented on these issues in the media.

Biography

He joined Standard Life Investments in 2000 as Global Investment Strategist before being appointed Head of Global Strategy in 2001.

Prior to this, he worked for HM Treasury and Lloyds Bank as an Economic Adviser, and Smith New Court as International Economist. In 1994 he was appointed Chief Economist with New Japan Securities Europe followed by Morley Fund Management in 1996 where he took up the position of Director of Economic Research & Business Risk.

Biography

Graeme Leach is Chief Economist and Director of Policy at the Institute of Directors, which he joined in August 1998. He is also visiting professor of economic policy at the University of Lincoln and a Senior Fellow at the Economic Policy Centre. Graeme is currently researching a forthcoming book in 2011: Size Matters – Why downsizing the state could supersize the economy.

In 2006 he was appointed to the Shadow Chancellor's Commission for Tax reform.

Prior to joining the IoD he was economics director at the Henley Centre, analysing future economic and social change.

Previously Graeme has worked as economic adviser to the Scottish Provident Investment Group and as a senior economic consultant with Pieda.

He is a frequent media commentator and in recent years has spoken at conferences in the USA, China, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Sweden, Ireland, Belgium, Greece, Taiwan and even Zimbabwe!

Biography

Andrew Lilico, director and principal at Europe Economics, is one of Europe's top experts on the economics of financial regulation. He directed the assessment for the European Parliament of the impact of the Financial Services Action Plan (FSAP) on each individual Member State of the EU25 and the EU25 as a whole, the assessment for the European Commission of the cost of complying with the FSAP, the assessment for the UK Financial Services Authority of the economic benefits of the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive, and the two impact assessments for the European Parliament on the AIFM Directive, as well as multiple other projects for European and UK regulators on mortgages, insurance, broking, capital requirements, and other financial regulation issues. His reports for Policy Exchange and for the Corporation of London on bank resolution regimes and the framework of banking regulation have been influential on the UK policy debate. He is a member of the IEA/Sunday Times Shadow Monetary Policy Committee, and a regular UK media commentator on economic and finance sector matters.

Biography

George Magnus is a Managing Director and the Senior Economic Advisor, a position to which he was appointed in 2004, following a seven-year spell as the Chief Economist. He is the author of The Age of Ageing - how demographics are changing the global economy and our world (John Wiley & Sons), and Uprising: will emerging markets shape or shake the world? Mr. Magnus's previous positions include Chief International Economist at UBS before the merger with Swiss Bank Corp, head of fixed income research and then Chief Economist at SG Warburg (1987-95), Chief International Economist at Chase Securities (1985-87, previously Laurie Milbank), Senior Financial Economist and then Head of Economics (EMEA region) at Bank of America (1977-85), European Economist at Lloyds Bank International (1974-77) and Economics Writer at the Central Office of Information (1972-74). Mr. Magnus received an MSc Econ from the School of Oriental and African Studies, and taught Economics at both the Central London Polytechnic (now University of Westminster) and the University of Illinois, where he was engaged in research on employment creation issues in less developed countries at the Institute of Labour and Industrial Relations

Biography

Steve Hanke is a Professor of Applied Economics at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and a Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute in Washington, D.C.  He is also a Columnist at Forbes magazine and a well-known currency and commodity trader and currency reformer.  In 1995 he presided over the world’s best-performing emerging market mutual fund, and in 1998 was named one of the twenty-five most influential people in the world. Prof. Hanke and his wife Liliane reside in Baltimore and Paris.

Biography

Tim Congdon is an economist and businessman, who has for over 30 years been a strong advocate of sound money and free markets in the UK’s public policy debates. He is often regarded as the UK’s leading “monetarist” economist. He was a member of the Treasury Panel of Independent Forecasters (the so-called “wise men”) between 1992 and 1997, which advised the Chancellor of the Exchequer on economic policy. He has been a visiting professor at two business schools. He writes columns on economics for Standpoint and the IEA’s journal, Economic Affairs, contributes to newspapers, and appears frequently on radio and television. Tim’s latest book, Money in a Free Society, was published last autumn.
