Biography

Stephen Riley joined Swiss Re in London as a graduate trainee in 1977.  He worked for the firm for the next twenty two years and was Managing Director of the UK Company from 1995.  In 1999 he spent six months working for CLM, the first Lloyd’s corporate capital vehicle and when this business was sold he joined CNA as Managing Director of its London Reinsurance Company.

 

In 2002 he moved to Global Aerospace where he is now a member of the Board and Chief Risk Officer.

 

Stephen is Chairman of the International Underwriting Association of London, Chairman of the London Market Group and a Vice President of the Insurance Institute of London.

Biography

Tadaharu Uehara (56) is the Chief Executive Officer of Tokio Marine Europe Insurance Ltd.  He was born in Tokyo and graduated from Hitotsubashi University in March 1979.

In 2011 Mr. Uehara was appointed Director, Europe and Africa, of Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co., Ltd.  Prior to this, from 2009, he was Senior General Manager, Europe, Middle East and Africa for the same company.

In 2008 Mr. Uehara was appointed to a number of positions, including his current role as Chief Executive Officer of Tokio Marine Europe Insurance Ltd.  These were:

  • General Manager, Europe, Middle East and Africa,
  • Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co., Ltd.
  • Non Executive Director, Kiln Group Ltd.
  • Non Executive Director, Tokio Marine Middle East Limited.
  • Non Executive Director, Allianz Sigorta A.S.
  • General Manager, Corporate Planning Department, Millea Holdings Inc.

In 2004 Mr. Uehara was appointed Non-Executive Director of Millea Mondial, Japan, and of Millea Real Estate Risk Management.  He also held the role of Deputy GM, Corporate Planning Department, Tokio Marine and Fire Insurance Co.

In 2001, Mr. Uehara became Vice President of Tokio Marine Management Inc. New York.  Prior to this, in 1997, he was appointed General Secretary of Tokio Marine Labor Union.

Mr. Uehara joined Tokio Marine & Fire Insurance Co., Ltd. in 1990.

Biography

Richard joined Opportunity International in January 2002 from Benfield Greig (now Aon Benfield), a leading reinsurance intermediary, where he worked as a reinsurance broker responsible for the African account and worked in a team covering the Middle East and South East Asia.

Richard pioneered the introduction of insurance products within the Opportunity Network which lead to the establishment of MicroEnsure in 2006. As a leading insurance intermediary for the poor, MicroEnsure provides life, health and weather index insurance to over 3,000,000 people in seven countries in Africa and Asia. In October 2007 MicroEnsure was awarded a $24.3m grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to expand its pioneering microinsurance and experiment with a wider range of distribution channels.

Richard also serves on the steering committee of the ILO “Micro Insurance Innovation Fund” a $35m fund provided by the Gates Foundation.

Lynn joined Chubb Insurance in May 2007, in a UK claims management role and in November 2010 was promoted to European Claims Manger with overall responsibility for Chubb’s claims functions within the UK and the Continent. 

She has over 25 years experience in claims management, having spent her career working for several general insurers.

Lynn is also a qualified mediator.

Nick joined Catlin in 1992 as a marine underwriter. He is a member of the Group Underwriting board and has been active underwriter of syndicate 2003 since 2006. With a premium income of over £1.4bn, syndicate 2003 is the largest syndicate in the Lloyd's 300 year history.

Biography

Paul is responsible for broking strategy, the broking function throughout the UK & Ireland and is directly responsible for the London Broking Team and the National Technical Practice.

Paul was born in London in 1953.

In 1972 he joined the NU as a trainee inspector and then joined Cornhill in 1975 as a junior underwriter. From 1976 until 1989 he was with Sedgwick now Marsh, joining as an accident technician and leaving as technical director of Sedgwick UK.

In 1989, he joined Minet which was taken over by Aon in 1997. At the time of leaving Aon in 2005 he was responsible for the UK account. 

2005-2006 Partner JLT Risk Solutions responsible for UK project management and marketing.

Paul joined Willis in September 2006.

Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute (FCII).  A Vice-President of the Insurance Institute of London CII. Chairman of the property committee of the Insurance Institute of London, past member of the accident committee, member of the Council of the IIL, past examiner and current author of subject CII subject 930 Insurance Broking, past member of the CII General Insurance Steering Group and London Market Faculty.

Biography

David has in-depth experience of risk, regulation and regulatory policy from all areas of the insurance industry. Prior to taking up his position at the Barbican, he was Head of Regulatory Affairs at RSA Group, where he coordinated the group’s activities on Solvency II, making an active contribution at European institutions and at industry working groups.
 
With regulatory experience going back to the mid 80s, David joined the FSA at its inception. He was responsible there for the supervision of Lloyd’s, developing and implementing much of the new FSA regime for the market. He developed and implement the prudential requirements for insurance intermediaries, before joining Lloyd’s in a senior compliance role where amongst other achievements he helped oversee the introduction of ICAS.

Biography

David is an experienced lawyer who specialised in high value, complex multi-jurisdictional disputes for commercial and insurance clients, who joined Aon from Eversheds LLP in April 2005

 

David heads up the Aon Limited FSG Legal & Claims practice, which is part of the global wording and claims offering for FSG clients.  David adds his extensive experience to the analysis, negotiation, broking and settlement of claims, and the drafting and development of wordings and coverages for Aon’s FSG clients (which covers clients and claims in the following areas):

  • Financial Institutions (PI, Directors & Officers (“D&O”) and Bond/Crime)
  • Commercial (D&O and Fidelity)
  • Transaction Liability (Warranty and Indemnity)
  • Insurance Companies (PI, D&O and Fidelity)
  • Fine Art & Specie.

 

Whilst in practice and at Aon, David has been involved in some of the largest losses that have affected Financial Institutions and the insurance market, including Fidelity, PI and D&O claims arising out of Film Finance litigation, Barings, Enron, Parmalat, Worldcom, Split Capital Investment Trusts, Endowment and Pension miss-selling, IPO laddering losses, Madoff, Lehmans, Al Ghosaibi, numerous regulatory investigations and the more ‘routine’ losses arising out of both internal and external fraud.  David also both drafts and advises on insurance contract performance, client internal reporting guidelines and insurers reserving philosophies.

 

David’s team also carries out ICAAP insurance reviews, and carries out insurance gap analysis for both clients and in relation to M&A work.  David is also responsible for FSG internal technical training on insurance, banking and executive liability issues and runs training seminars for Aon clients.  David is a Committee Member of the British Insurance Law Association, a member of the London Market Claims Council and speaks regularly at international insurance, banking and executive liability conferences.

Biography

Jason joined Hiscox in 2007, and currently holds the title of Actuary and Solvency 2 Project Manager. He has responsibility for shaping the implementation of Solvency 2 for the HIscox Group. Hiscox is a Bermudan based insurance group, which has significant operations within Europe and Lloyd's of London. Jason's main focus is developing a workable structure that technically satisfies the Solvency 2 requirements for the various jurisdictions. Prior to joining Hiscox, Jason has held a variety of actuarial roles within Australia, including responsibilities in south-east Asia. The experience he has gained over the last 20 years encompasses most aspects of non-life insurance actuarial work, including holding Approved Actuary positions within 4 different countries. Jason is a qualified actuary and chartered accountant.

Biography

Dr Patrick McSharry is Head of Catastrophe Risk Financing at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, University of Oxford.  He is a Senior Academic in the Willis Research Network, a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, a Senior Member of the IEEE and a member of the International Institute of Forecasters.  He takes a multidisciplinary approach to developing quantitative techniques for forecasting, classification, decision-making, and risk management.  His research focuses on probabilistic forecasting of nonlinear complex systems, prediction analytics, and machine learning, and he is particularly interested in how decision-makers and policy-makers integrate information from quantitative and qualitative models.  He has published over 70 peer-reviewed papers, is the Principal Investigator on a number of academic grants, and consults for national and international government agencies and the insurance, finance, energy, and healthcare sectors.

Graham has spent most of his career in the business application of technology although he began in education teaching both English and Mathematics in comprehensive schools and English as a foreign language at a university in Cyprus. He has covered the car industry, engineering, the oil business and for the last 22 years has worked exclusively in insurance and financial services. He was originating architect for a world-wide Life and Pensions administration system and subsequently its Global Product Manager. In the supply of IT based solutions he has been responsible for business development, consultancy, sales support and marketing for both European and global enterprises.
